01 / Exclusive capacity

Full Truckload (FTL)

Reserve a truck’s freight capacity for your shipment. FTL is suited to larger loads and freight that benefits from travelling separately from other customers’ shipments.

A full truckload booking reserves a truck’s freight capacity for your shipment. Your goods are loaded at the pickup, stay on the same trailer, and are unloaded at the delivery, rather than being combined with freight from other customers along the way.

Your shipment does not have to physically fill the trailer to travel as FTL. Customers also choose full truckload when a load is awkward to handle, when it should not be moved between trailers, or when it simply suits the shipment to travel on its own.

Best suited to

  • Larger shipments and high-volume freight
  • Loads that need a truck’s capacity reserved for them
  • Freight that benefits from travelling separately from other customers’ shipments
  • Shipments where extra handling in transit is best avoided

02 / Shared trailer space

Less Than Truckload (LTL)

Move smaller freight shipments without reserving an entire trailer. LTL combines shipments from multiple customers, making it a practical option for palletised goods and smaller commercial loads.

Less than truckload moves smaller freight without reserving an entire trailer. Your shipment travels with freight from other customers, and you are quoted for the portion of the trailer your goods occupy rather than for the whole truck.

Because LTL freight is combined with other shipments, it is usually handled more than a full truckload is. Palletised, well-packaged, clearly labelled goods travel best. Pricing and suitability depend on your shipment’s dimensions, weight, route, handling requirements, and other details, so an LTL quote is prepared shipment by shipment.

Long-haul covers the longer distances: freight travelling between distant Canadian destinations, and trips reaching across North America. Like cross-border, it describes the journey rather than the equipment, so a long-haul trip may be arranged as FTL or LTL.

01What is the difference between FTL and LTL?

Full truckload reserves a truck’s freight capacity for your shipment, so your goods travel on their own from pickup to delivery. Less than truckload uses part of a trailer that is shared with other customers’ freight, so shipments are combined and generally handled more in transit. FTL suits larger loads and freight that benefits from travelling separately; LTL suits smaller, well-packaged shipments. Which one fits depends on your shipment, and dispatch can talk it through with you.

02Does my shipment need to fill a truck to use FTL?

No. A shipment does not have to physically fill the trailer to travel as full truckload. FTL is about reserving the capacity, not about filling every inch of it. Customers also choose FTL when a load is awkward to handle, when it should not be moved between trailers in transit, or when it simply suits the freight to travel separately.

03What information is needed for a freight quote?

The most useful starting points are your pickup and delivery locations including city, province or state, postal or ZIP code, and country; what you are shipping; the pallet or package count, dimensions, and total weight; and your preferred pickup and requested delivery dates. It also helps to know whether there is a commercial dock or a forklift at each end, whether a liftgate is needed, and whether an appointment is required. Estimates are fine where details are still being confirmed.

04Can I request a Canada–U.S. shipment?

Yes. Include both countries along with the pickup and delivery cities in your quote request, and tell us about the cargo and your timing requirements. Cross-border is a route category, so the shipment may travel as either FTL or LTL. Utopia Logistics Inc. does not advertise customs brokerage or guaranteed border clearance; documentation and border responsibilities are discussed before a trip is arranged.

05How do I check availability for my route?

Send the route to dispatch. Enter your pickup and delivery cities in the route planner or the quote request form, add your freight details and preferred dates, and our team will confirm whether the route is available for your shipment. Our coverage map shows a broad North American outlook rather than a fixed list of lanes, so availability is always confirmed route by route.
